Fall 2012 Fashion Trends, Trend Ten: Opulent Baroque

On the Runway

Some of the runway looks for fall look as if they belong in a royal court from centuries ago, but at the same time look completely appropriate and fresh today in 2012.  The trend is tied to the golds from the Shiny & Sparkly Fall 2012 trend.  I love the black-and-gold looks from Dolce & Gabbana and Jason Wu.  Marchesa’s look for Spring 2013 is pictured below – the gold detailing on the sheer neckline is gorgeous.

Ideas for Styling

The great thing about this trend is that it speaks for itself quite well – you won’t need as much time to style and accessorize such bold patterns.  If you find a great cocktail dress in a rich brocade, you won’t need to layer on the jewelry.

Check out this bold fashion move – mixing prints by doing brocade on brocade!

Tips for Thrifting

Look for beautiful brocade pieces in your favorite colors – jewel tones are especially luxe and look great on a variety of skin tones.  If you want just a hint of the trend, go for a brocade bag.  Shoes are also a trendy update – check out these pretty brocade smoking slippers.

Sometimes the line between “opulent” and “costume” can be very blurred, especially in the capsule of the thrift store.  Have a clear vision for any piece you pick out, but don’t be afraid to take a risk and style it when you get home.  If it doesn’t work out, you’ve only spent a couple of dollars and learned a great lesson.  Keep trying!

How I Interpreted the Trend

Unfortunately, I didn’t have much to pull from my closet on this trend.  Guess it’s off to the thrift store I go!

This is the closest I could come:  a bold vintage red dress with vibrant detailed embroidery.  The embroidery detail gives a punch of color and a sense of richness.  At the very least, it speaks to the floral trend for fall.  Okay, this one may be a bit of a stretch, but it’s still cute!

  1. Definitely could be too ‘costumey’ if found in a thrift store. I think it would be something kind of hard to find with a classy look, although, I am sure it could be done. Maybe with the help of a few alterations… Looking forward to the last of your Trends for Fall!
