12 Days of Thrifty Christmas: Spa

You don’t need to spend a fortune on a spa day for a friend in need of a little pampering.  Give her the tools to spa it up in the comfort of her own home.

Buy some towels in her favorite color and monogram her initials to make them seem more high-end.  If you embroider, DIY it with thrifted embroidery floss or thread.  Buy little soaps, bath salts, lotion, and other similar goodies.  You can often find complete, unopened bath sets in the thrift stores.  If you think that’s too weird, these items can be purchased fairly cheaply from big box stores.  Candles or DIY sugar scrubs are good too.  If you plan to give multiple spa gifts, buy a big bottle of bath salts and thrift smaller (empty) bottles to parcel out from the bulk bottle.  Amp it up with a gift certificate for a massage or facial at her favorite salon.

You can really up the ante with the presentation of this gift – done well, it can convey that luxurious feeling of a spa, for much less.  Thrift a nice basket, wash it or sanitize it well.  (Baskets can also be found fairly cheaply at big box stores.)  Use the towel as a stuffing base.  Nestle goodies in the folds of the towel.  If you opt for a bath set (common gift staple), sometimes it helps to rewrap the items if the packaging looks cheap.
